WHAT GOES INTO OUR BEESWAX WRAPS?
Anyone who has spent 5 minutes on the internet looking up “How to make beeswax wraps” will have been met with a minefield of recipes, suggestions and tips. Well to be honest we started in exactly the same place over 4 years ago and after countless “How to” searches, even more trial batches and years of making, perfecting and continually striving to create the perfect blend of ingredients for our beeswax wraps, we believe we have formulated the perfect recipe to make the best beeswax wraps in Melbourne and Australia.
A girl has to have some secrets, so I won’t share the exact proportions (soz), but if you’re keen to try making your own, you can always have a crack at it using our DIY kit which is includes our pre-mix of our fabulous blend.
SO WHAT GOES INTO OUR BEESWAX WRAPS?
Bees play such a vital role and we owe so much to these incredible little legends! Beeswax is naturally produced by bees in order to build their hexagonal combs to store pollen and honey and to raise their offspring. This ancient wax is where all the magic happens and (obviously) the core ingredient and what makes beeswax wraps so brilliant. Considered to contain anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, it’s the beeswax that helps to keep your food lasting longer and better preserved when wrapped in a Beekeepa food wrap.
Our beeswax is sourced from Australian apiaries and our focus is always to support businesses that practice ethical and sustainable beekeeping practices, with an ongoing focus on supporting happy, healthy bee populations.
I often get asked what the purpose of jojoba oil is in beeswax wraps? There are several; Jojoba oil helps to keep your beeswax food wrap supple during use, and this natural oil has the added benefit of not only being food safe but contains antibacterial properties as well.
We only choose the best, and the 100% jojoba oil that goes into our wraps is grown in the red soil, under the hot sun of the great Australian Outback.
Our Jojoba oil is sourced from co-op growers who are dedicated to ensuring plantation methods are not only efficient, but that they implement an effective system of quality control for their oils. These Australian farmers, are dedicated to sustainable farming methods and committed to the protection of the environment. The oil used in our beeswax wraps are produced without the use of insecticides, not made from transgenic plants and are not tested on animals.
Why coconut oil you may ask; well, like the jojoba oil, it aides in keeping the wrap more pliable and supple, and owing to how it reacts to heat, it does a brilliant job of reducing cracks and hardening of wraps over time. Initially the oils feel almost sticky (sounds counterintuitive I know), but over time they work to keep your wrap softer than they would be without the oil.
Our coconut oil is sourced from Niugini Organics who’s aim is support fair trade, sustainability and empower the local land owners, many of whom are women to harvest their land enabling them to earn a proper income from the land they own. It’s a truly inspiring story and worth checking out, not to mention amazing organic produce.
Now this is where things get really sticky! This is the ingredient that gives Beekeepa wraps their stick and cling factor. Damar resin is harvested from the tree family Dipterocarpaceae in East Asia. The process involves slashing the trees yearly allowing the sap to ooze out. Once the sap dries and solidifies it is harvested. This method of harvesting is not harmful to the tree and a sustainable alternative to deforestation and a practice that is helping to keep Javenese rainforests alive.
The resin is then melted down filtered and blended together with our other ingredients ready to be infused and made into our brilliant, sustainable environmentally friendly Beekeepa beeswax wrap alternative to single use plastics.
I hope this give you a good insight into how we like to do things here at Beekeepa, and we welcome any comment/suggestion. We're always just and email away firstname.lastname@example.org
